For coaches
Your games go in and come out
PGN in and out, properly. Comments, variations, variations inside variations, annotation marks and NAGs, evaluation and clock data. Import a student's game from anywhere; export it and open it in whatever you already use.
Paper goes in too. Scan a club scoresheet with the camera and the game is in the app in a few seconds. Free, and unlimited.
Setting work for a student
Annotate a game — comments on the moves, variations for the lines you want them to see — and send it to them as a PGN. They open it in Slate Chess and walk it on a real board instead of reading it as text.
Positions export as diagrams, in board styles made for print, for worksheets.
What the review gives you
The accuracy figures and the curve give you a thirty-second read on a game you have not seen. The marked mistakes tell you where to spend the lesson.
The motif vocabulary — hanging pieces, allowing forks, missing material — is the same in the review, on the student's improvement plan and in the puzzles, so "you are allowing forks" means one thing across the whole app and you can point at it.
What it does not do
Slate does not replace you. It says what happened in a game; it does not know what a particular student is ready to hear next, and it does not set a curriculum. The improvement plan is deliberately something the player chooses rather than something the app decides for them — which leaves the deciding with you.
