SLATE CHESS ENGINE - FREEWARE LICENCE (public binaries) Applies to Slate 0.5.3, published 3 November 2026. Copyright (c) 2026 Turtle Leap LLC. All rights reserved. This licence covers the public Slate engine binaries ("the Software") published on slatechess.com and the files that come with them. It does not cover the Slate Chess app or the Slate source code, which are licensed separately. 1. Permitted use. You may, free of charge: a. run the Software on any number of computers you use, for personal play and analysis; b. use it in engine-versus-engine testing, tournaments and rating lists; c. publish the results, games, ratings and statistics you obtain with it, with no restriction, including commercially (for example in a magazine or on a website); d. pass on exact, unmodified copies of the downloaded archive, free of charge, for the uses in a to c (for example to other testers of a rating list), with this licence included. 2. Not permitted without the copyright holder's written permission: a. selling the Software, charging for access to it, or bundling it with anything sold; b. including or embedding the Software in another product or service, whether an app, a website, a server, a device or a game, other than as an engine run by an end user in a chess GUI on their own computer; c. modifying the Software, or decompiling, disassembling or reverse-engineering it, except where the law gives you that right regardless of this licence; d. removing or changing this licence or any copyright notice; e. presenting the Software, or results from it, as someone else's work. 3. Names. "Slate" and "Slate Chess" are the names of the copyright holder's products. You may use the name "Slate" to identify the Software (for example in a rating list or a tournament table), but not in a way that suggests the copyright holder endorses you or your product. 4. Third-party components. Notices for the components compiled into the Software are in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt, which comes with it. Those components remain under their own licences. 5. No warranty. The Software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. In no event shall the copyright holder be liable for any claim, damages or other liability arising from the Software or its use, to the extent the law allows. 6. Ending. This licence ends automatically if you break it. Uses already made under section 1c (published results and games) remain permitted. 7. Changes. Later versions of the Software may come with a different licence; each version is covered by the licence that came with it. Contact for permissions: support@slatechess.com
